Participants aboard an educational cruise have an opportunity to serve as freshwater scientists, collecting data and observations about the water bodies they sail through.

Attendees will get to experience one of AWRI's educational cruises on the W.G. Jackson, sailing through Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan and serving as aquatic scientists for the day. They will collect and compile data, and use it to make claims about the water bodies of study at the time of the cruise. AWRI staff will also share about AWRI's research and pioneering work offering place-based aquatic science education for nearly 40 years.
  • Sarah Wood, Kent ISD
    Grades 3-8
This is an excursion event to Rycenga Park (5 minutes away). Bring comfortable walking shoes and bug spray.
Transportation and lunch will be provided.

As important as technology has become a vital part of our day-to-day lives, sometimes it is important to disconnect a bit and connect with nature. Not only for our own well-being outside of the classroom, but inside as well! In this pre-conference learning experience, you will learn about how Geocaching can be used to get you outside, moving, enjoying nature, and making connections for use in your classroom math practices.
This will be hands-on learning and exploration. Participants will not only engage in a geocaching experience, but learn how they can create a geocaching experience on their school grounds for students to engage in. High levels of collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creativity, and confidence will revolve around the math content at the center.
  • Join Dr. Coffey for an afternoon of design thinking, learning, & teaching.

    Grades 9-12
    Full day
    Location: Fruitport High School
Learners will experience contextual learning by participating in activities they can do with their students. We will take time to brainstorm how teachers can transfer this knowledge into their classrooms and what resources are needed to make contextual teaching possible in their schools.

    Grade 6-12
This full day event will take place at Fruitport High School. Lunch will be provided. Please bring your own laptop.
